Make Money Growing Plants

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Julie Jones It doesn’t matter where you live, if you have a small area that you can use for planting, you can make money growing small plants at home! You can actually make excellent money on an area that is only 30 by 40 feet. You will be amazed at how much money you can make if you have an area of this size to work with. Even if you live in an apartment, a tiny nursery can make good money and be very rewarding. This rewarding home business can work successfully for virtually anyone in any type of area. The market for plants is huge. Over four billion dollars last year alone, and the demand is tremendous. And you as a small grower have an advantage over the large grower because as a backyard grower you have virtually no overhead. Getting started with a backyard nursery costs almost nothing. All you have to do is root some cuttings and you’re on your way. There are dozens of simple plant propagation techniques that are so easy that children could do them with great success! Even if you don’t know anything about plants, all you have to do is learn a little bit about one plant at a time. Once you’ve grown that plant from a cutting in your nursery you will be an expert on that plant. Then you can learn about a few more. It’s much less complicated that some people would like you to believe. You can start in an area about the size of a picnic table! If you root your cuttings in flats that are about 12×15 inches, you can get around 100 and 150 cuttings per flat. In an area about the size of a picnic table you should be able to root several thousand cuttings! As soon as your cuttings are well rooted, they can be sold immediately! A rooted cutting is typically worth about 50 cents. If you have 1500 cuttings at 50 cents each, that is $750.! This should get you thinking about the tremendous income possibilities that a small backyard nursery can provide. A backyard nursery is one of the most fun and rewarding businesses that you can be involved in. You can learn as you go, it costs very little to get started in and the rewards both personally and monetarily can be quite high. It’s really much easier than you think! How Well Do You Manage Your Boss?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Marcia Zidle Are you in this situation? You and your boss just dont seem to connect and work well together. It isnt that you are having knock down fights. Its just that you know things could be better. You dont want to look for another job so you have to figure out how to make it work. Basically its your responsibility to manage your boss. Here are tips that can get you on the right track. Know thy boss. No two people think alike or work alike. No two bosses either. Your job is to find out her specific expectations - not to reform her, reeducate her or make her conform to what the management books recommend. For example: Does she want me to come in once a month and spend 30 minutes presenting the plans and performance of my team? Or does she want me to come in every time there is ay thing to report or to discuss even when there is the slightest change? Make the boss as effective as possible. Go to her and ask: What do I do and what do my people do that helps you do your job? And what do we do that hampers you and makes life more difficult for you? You need to find out what your boss needs and what gets in the way. Also realize that it is in your self interest to make the boss successful. Keep the boss aware. Make sure she understands the following: What can be expected of you and your people; your goals and objectives; and most important your specific priorities. Bosses, after all, are held responsible by their own bosses for the performance of their people. They must be able to say: I know what Anne (or Joe) is doing. Bosses dont like surprises! The Hottest Toys for 2007

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Mikey Simms Year after year more and more toys flood the market, new trends rise, new trends die. Finally a trend comes along that will probably last for a while; Webkinz. Ok I must admit at first glance these look like a total gimmick to suck parents dry of every last dollar this year. However this toy crosses a barrier not many toys have been able to do. Not only are they cool, educational and fun, kids and parents alike seem to love them. Unlike many toy trends this one will last more than 1-2 years and you’re about to find out why. I know you are probably saying to yourself now (yeah right) but webkinz are different than other toys. They seem to come to life and children everywhere can’t wait to get home and finish their homework to play with their webkinz online. So what is going to make them last you might ask? Tickle Me Elmo didn’t last more than 2 years beanie babies they were great for a short time. Well the answer is simple; creation. When you go online with your webkinz pet you give it life into a game and then build your pet up and earn kinz cash after creating their pet and their world. Think of it as almost role playing a character that you created. Its also an interactive world that has limitless potential as long as Ganz continually updates the enviroment kids will be hooked at the changes. So you build your pet up in a new world and bring it all to life. Sure it could get dull at some point and it will as kids get older they won’t want to play anymore, but new recruits can be brought in everyday. Unlike most toys that are just a physical doll or toy this brings entertainment to a new level. You get the physical products and the mental product of going into your own little world. I see this trend lasting awhile I’d estimate about 5 years. Even after 5 years however it won’t be dead it will have life for upwards of 7-8 years before fading out with the next new hot product that takes the world by storm. Webkinz bring a whole new element to the interactive experience that kids have longed for for years that outside of a video game or console system never really existed. Ganz will create new products each year that revolve in the webkinz universe that collectors and kids alike will have to get their hands on. Even as we speak some of the collectors pieces are going for over $200! The trend will be determined by supply and demand right now supplies are low and eventually supply will meet demand and the trend will level off and fade away. It won’t fade away for quite some time however because this product simply has it all. Parents think of it as a way to keep your kids out of trouble and away from violence all while enjoying their own virtual world. What is a Pore or Skin Cleanser?

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Jen Carter Youve probably come here in hopes to battle acne. Weve all had different forms of skin acne at one point or another. Clogged pores are one of the leading contributors to acne. If you see a black dot on your face, thats not a mole or freckle, its probably a blocked pore or blackhead. Dont get alarmed, dont pick at it. Theres several things you can do to unclog your pores. Please read on as we describe a few successful acne remedies, specifically blocked pore remedies below: First, have you ever heard of a skin cleanser? A skin or pore cleanser is typically a bottle of liquid, referred to as an astringent. It will smell strong, and it may even burn a little once applied to your skin. It removes all the dirt and oils in your skin. Skin Cleanser should be applied by a cotton ball and wiped across your face, after your face is washed thoroughly with warm water. The acne astringent or pore cleanser will help you to prevent acne. By unclogging blocked pores, the pore cleanser is keeping dirt from collecting and forming a pimple. This is a great method for keeping pimples and acne from starting. Pore cleansers are strongly suggested for teen acne. Many teens produce excessive amounts of oil, which in turn cause acne. By removing the oils with a pore cleanser, theres less of a likelihood of acne forming. While theres not guarantee that pore cleanser will cure or prevent all pimples, its a very good way of keeping pimples from becoming large and inflamed. Most pore cleansers contain alcohol. This has negatives and bonuses. On one hand alcohol based astringents are perfect for acne. Alcohol dries pimples up and helps them disappear faster. One the other hand, alcohol has been known to dry up faces and make them look very dull. It can also make a face peel and look flakey when used in excess. Despite this, a good balance of pore cleanser and nightly moisturizing should be a perfect balance. Its also recommended to exfoliate prior to applying pore cleanser. Exfoliating removes trapped dirt from deep pores, whereas pore cleaner generally removes dirt from the surface of pores. If you follow this routine daily in tandem with a DHT reducing product to reduce skin oils, you should notice a significant difference in your skin. If your skin becomes irritated from pore cleanser, discontinue use immediately and search for an alternative acne method. The Father of the Bride

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Ken Bissonette The father of the bride also plays an important role in the wedding. In keeping with tradition, the father is the supporter and protector of his daughter. However, his relationship with his family, as well as his financial situation determines just how big or small his role will be. He may be a traditional father, demanding respect, and expecting that he will have a major role in his daughters wedding. He may however feel the opposite of this, in that he does not want much or any involvement in the plans of the wedding. If the father wishes to be a part of the planning, he has certain roles to fulfill. These would include but are not limited to: providing emotional and financial support to the bride, father of the bride speech, wedding planning, keeping the bride relaxed and calm before the ceremony, escorting the bride to the place of worship, and walking with her up the aisle on his right arm. He must stand on her left on the chancel steps. The minister will ask who gives this woman away, and the father will answer? I do? He than may take the brides right hand, and give it to the minister, who will than give it to the groom. He will than stand quietly in position, until the vows have been exchanged, in which he’ll than return to the pew on the left side of the church. The custom remains traditional for both parents to witness the signing of the register. The father of the bride will play a key role with his daughters wedding. With traditional walk up the aisle, plans of the wedding and the father of the bride speech at the reception. All this work is custom for the father and traditional wedding for his daughter will go over well planned. Light Requirements for Indoor Plants

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

By Briscoe White Different houseplants make different demands on their environment. Most plants have their requirements expressed by symbols, which you will find on the care tag of most plants. The trick is figuring out what those symbols actually mean. Most light needs are divided into 3 specific categories: full sun, semi-shade and shade. However, these classifications are not standardized, so variations do exist. In addition, the number of daylight hours also has an effect on the growth of plants. In winter, there is less sunlight and a plant that received more than adequate light during the summer months may be light deprived in the winter. Be flexible. The number of daylight hours also influences the flowering period and the growth of the plant. There are two distinctions that can be made regarding the growth and flowering habits of houseplants. Some plants will only bloom whiten there are only a few hours of daylight while others bloom only when the day is long. Short-day plants make flower buds when there is less than 12 daylight hours. Long-day plants flower when there are more than 12 daylight hours. Growers make use of these characteristics by keep plants artificially dark (the poinsettias are brought on early for the Christmas trade) or growing in artificial light in the winter for earlier blooms. In general, the three light requirements are: Full Sun the plant tolerates unshaded sunlight for an unlimited number of hours each day. It can be placed in or near a south facing window. Semi-shade this plant needs a lot of sunlight, but it has to be protected from the strongest rays of the sun. In a south-facing window, blinds should be shading it form direct light. An east facing window, where the sun disappears after about 10 AM, is a good choice as is a west facing window where the plant will receive afternoon sun. This classification is also often called bright, indirect light. Shade this plant should not be exposed to any direct sunlight, particularly in the summer. A northern exposure is best. This is tricky as you do need some sun, or the plant will not grow. In 1985, Briscoe White opened The Growers Exchange in an abandoned Texaco station on a busy urban street corner in Richmond, Virginia. The facility has grown over the years, and is now 5 distinct growing environments with 5 acres under cover. Briscoe has over 25 years of gardening experience. Secret Information

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Steven Gillman Secret information? Okay, probably not much remains truly hidden or forbidden anymore, but there are little secrets about how things work. Salesmen, politicians, and others learn and use subtle techniques to influence you. “Lucky people” use little-known tricks to get that way. Here are some examples. Controling Through Words There is a classic joke, “Have you stopped beating your wife?” It is difficult to answer without incriminating yourself. This technique of the implicit premise is used by politicians for more than jokes. Get everyone to argue about how to do something, for example, like win the the “war” on drugs, and nobody questions if it should even be done. Implicit premises are a powerful method of control. Get in the habit of recognizing the premises hidden in political debate. Another way to influence people is to control language. Since social security payments don’t come from actual investments, unless you call the government lending itself money “investing”, social security isn’t a “retirement fund.” Calling it that, however, makes it seem safer and more acceptable than what it is: welfare. You can see how the words used control the debate. Our words matter greatly. Could it be difficult politically to spend millions on “human shredder” bombs? Maybe that’s why they are called “daisy cutters.” Start paying attention, and you’ll see how words are being used to influence you. Hypnotic Sales Techniques Read the following sales pitch: “Does speaking before a crowd make you nervous? What if it was easy? Imagine standing there in front of a crowd, knowing exactly what to say to make them love you. Wouldn’t that feel wonderful? Just apply our simple methods, and you will have that power. Use the form below to ORDER RIGHT NOW.” It starts by getting you to say yes, which is habit forming. It hints at the possibility of a solution. The word “Imagine,” in line three, gets you doing just that. Line four suggests positive emotion and gets another yes. “And” in line five infers cause and effect, that you’ll have the power BECAUSE you used their product. The last line directs you with “Use the form below.” The “order right now” is called an “embedded command,” because putting it in capitals influences you without you noticing consciously. When I learned dozens of these techniques, I used them to re-write the sign-up page for one of my newsletters, and I started to get four times as many subscribers from the same traffic. Secret information or not, it is powerful stuff. More Secret Information “Lucky people” create the right conditions for “luck,” by being in the right place, and around people who can help. Good salesmen use techniques like “mirroring,” and “leading,” to persuade you. Research from the new science of behavioral economics is applied by smart marketers to create methods of getting you to buy. Secret information isn’t all about influencing others. Most industries and human activities have little-known “tricks of the trade.” Wise real estate agents sell expensive homes, for example, because they know it takes the same work as selling a mobile home, but the commission can be five times as much. Those who don’t use this “secret” struggle to make a living. Certainly, subliminal techniques and other “forbidden knowledge” can be used for good or bad, so are they dangerous? Yes, especially if you’re not in on the secret. Why not start to gather some of your own secret information? Steve Gillman has been hunting down obscure knowledge and useful secrets for years. You’re Bright And Talented — TooT Your Own Horn –

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

By Don Monteith Obviously, there are RIGHT ways to move UP the ladder. Being in the right place certainly has tremendous benefits. YOU have to kinda find ways to be at the right place at the opportune time. An important suggestion is to be very careful with whom YOU keep company. Select your MODEL or confident carefully. Do not think that everyone has YOUR best interest at heart. AMBITION GETS NOTICED Speak UP when the opportunity presents itself. Dont be afraid to contribute your best. Let others know your desire and expectation to be a contributor of your talents and skills whenever needed. Consider yourself a valuable asset to your new department or your new boss. Let it be known that you are willing and able to take on a challenge. Move beyond the usual employee with little ambition. Do it with kindness, yet dont hold back in fear of what others in the department will say or think. SOME WRONG STEPS First, move forward with your plan but never RUN OVER your fellow associates. You dont have to nor will it be in your best interest. Theres an old saying that the cream rises to the TOP. Its automatic. Youve seen it in your past experiences and it will happen in your new job. Count on it! Unfortunately, some new employees get in the wrong peer group. Join the wrong bunch at the water cooler. Too much gossip. A powder keg of explosives waiting to blow. Not a good place for you. Stay in your corner away from this bad influence. Every office has the rumor mill. Sharing secrets that everyone knows. Talking in hushed tones and looking for trouble. RUN! FAST! NOW! Associate with those who are focused on the business. Working! Giving a fair return to your employer. Miss the dirt dished out by these folks. Most of it is little more than sour grapes and often deserved by the goof-offs. DON’T BADMOUTH THE BOSS — Keep in mind that your BOSS may hold the key to your success. He or She may be your best advocate. Encourager. Cheerleader in your corner. Even if YOU are smarter (in your opinion) you are not the boss (yet!) GROUP SUPPORT Are you a player? Do you work well with your peers? Can you share the glory and success of a job well done? Is that who you are? Smart managers will be aware of how you get along with your fellow associates. Its very hard to become a star without others helping you along the way. You will need a strong support system. Work on your ability to live in harmony with your fellow associates. Dont be a loner. Get involved in the good politics. Risks are always involved. Everyone who moves UP the ladder encounters some real challenges. Your fellow associates may be jealous of your talent or ability. They can see you as too ambitious. Keep on doing. Be a mover and shaker. Tackle the big tasks. Get beyond your comfort zone. Risk failure. You cannot play it safe and expect to get ahead of the pack. Show your courage in presenting NEW ideas to management even if you get knocked down. DO NOT OVER-PROMISE Be an eager beaver but watch your step. Everyone loves a volunteer. Dont take on more than you can do. Limit your project commitments to a sure thing. You dont want to be known as all talk and an unreliable performer. Be able to finish every project and make it a wow kind of result. Know your limits and be sure you are not stepping into a minefield for disaster. Action Tip: Self-promotion is GOOD for your career. The ambitious person gets noticed and advances UP the corporate ladder. Volunteer only for challenging jobs with a wow finish. Never over-promise. Be a reliable source. Go beyond your comfort zone. Give credit due associates. Be a risk taker. Avoid the water-cooler gossip losers. Don Monteith spent 32 years as co-owner of several franchises and a personnel/staffing business. The Joy of Kite Flying

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By Milton Drepaul In my country Guyana this time of the year is associated with kite making and kite flying. It is so traditional in my country that when I first lived away from it I was taken aback that Easter came and there were no kites. Recently I tried to find out the origins of this tradition. Asking older people only brought vague responses about it being our way of celebrating the resurrection of Christ. When I began researching the history of kites I found out that in both China and India there were long kite traditions. Something clicked. Maybe the Chinese or Indians brought it to Guyana. As usual there are different claims about where kites originated. In some accounts it is China. Other stories say it began with societies in the South Pacific. The Balinese have a beautiful story on the origin of kites. Kite flying symbolizes mans dream of flying. One of the most powerful Greek myths is that of Icarus who flew with wings but went too near the sun which melted the wax holding his wings together. Kites even have their own museums and festivals. The Kite Museum of Ahmedabad in India gives you a glimpse of the history of mans joy of flying kites. Kite flying has not only been a recreation it has played important roles in war and science. There is the story of Hsiang Y who flew a kite at night to frighten the army of Liu Pang founder of the Han dynasty in China. This is the ancient equivalent of our flying black hawk helicopters to scare the Taliban. There are accounts from 100 BC to 500 AD of generals using kites to send signals, messages and even weapons. They were used for observation and to measure the distance of enemy camps. A modern version of this is pilotless drones doing similar duties. Many of us have read about Ben Franklins kite experiment in 1752.He sent up a kite in a storm to prove that lightning was of the same electric matter as the one that generated electricity. He attached a projecting metal wire to his kite. This drew lightning when an electrified cloud passed over his kite. Kites played an important role in the development of aircraft. A major milestone in kite flying was in 1870 when an Australian inventor Lawrence Hargrave created box-kites whose stability was the inspiration for power driven aeroplanes. Alexander Graham Bell,Samuel Cody and the Wright brothers experimented with very large man-carrying kites and biplane gliders. From my research the most popular Kite flying countries are China, Japan, India, and Thailand. I was intrigued to read about ‘kite fights’. This is something I remember from my childhood. Kite fighters try to cut opponents kites down using various methods. The technique used in Afghanistan ( Gudiparan Baz. ) where the string of the tails of the kites are passed through a mixture of ground glass powder and glue to make them capable of cutting either the tails or the string controlling the kite is very familiar to me. Perhaps my Corentyne cousins had some Afghan ancestry! Some interesting traditional International Kite Flying festivals I found are in Greece, India and Pakistan. Greeks fly kites on the first Monday of Lent. This is known as Clean Monday. Millions fly kites all over northern India during the Indian festival of Makar Sankranti, a spring festival celebrated every January 14 and a public holiday in Gujarat. In neighboring Pakistan, kite flying is done in Basant -their spring festival. Today we have competitions for multi-line kite flying, precision flying and for the artistic interpretation of music. The Joy of Kite Flying continues.
