What You Can Learn About Selling, From Kate Moss

By Craig Garber Like my wife, super model Kate Moss was born in England. Unlike my wife, Kate Moss has a little “nose candy” problem. Personally, I don’t think it’s anyone’s business who’s doingwhat — to each his own. And besides, good ole Kate’sprobably a saint next to most people in the entertainmentindustry. However, since, as Thoreau said, “Most men lead lives ofquiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still inthem,” once the press got a hold of what was going on, theyhad an absolute field day. Moss has subsequently lost nearly $3 Million Dollars worthof modeling contracts because of this. What happened was, after Kate spent weeks denying herproblem, avoiding the issue, and saying nothing, she cameout with this statement last week: “I want to apologize to all of the people I have let downbecause of my behavior, which has reflected badly on myfamily, friends, coworkers, business associates, andothers.” Now Moss will eventually be forgiven — after all, if MarvAlbert can be forgiven — anyone can. But don’t you thinkMoss would have been completely forgiven — and forgivenalmost immediately — if she would have just taken ownershipof the issue straight-away, and admitted it? Don’t you think if Kate came right out and said somethinglike this, it would have gone a LOT further? “I realize I have a problem, and I also realize that todate, I’ve done a bad job managing it. However, I am nowtaking steps to fix this situation. I hope all my friends,my family, and my business associates, can find it in theirheart to forgive me for this indescretion, and recognizethat in the end, I am only human too.” The thing is, whenever you’re looking at tweaking your salescopy — http://www.kingofcopy.com/salescopyreview — one ofthe smartest things you can ever do, is to come clean withany wrinkles or product flaws you have. This makes you a lot more “real” to your prospects. It alsolets them know, that you too, are only human, and it makesalmost ANYTHING else you’re saying, have 100% credibility. Here’s what I mean. Let’s say you’re selling some kind of alawnmower. Maybe you’d reveal your flaws like this: “Listen, the LawnTrimmer is probably the most effortlesslawn-cutter you’ll ever be able to use. But one thing Imust let you know about the LawnTrimmer, is that if yourback-yard has LOADS of trees, or if you’ve got an unusualamount of curves to go around to get your lawn looking even, then the LawnTrimmer isn’t for you. See, the LawnTrimmer was originally designed to manicureprofessional golf-courses — you know the ones I mean”…yadda, yadda, yadda. So make sure you’re revealing your flaws in your salespitches. Plus, if they’re big flaws, your prospect deservesto know about them — after all, nothing’s worse than beingdisappointed after you buy something. Well… there are things worse than that, but they’reirrelevant for now. O.K.? The other thing this whole issue about Kate Moss teachesyou, is that in the end… we’re all on the same levelplaying field. See, even though Moss was making over$10,000 Dollars DAILY in her heyday during the 1990’s,that didn’t stop her from being made out to be “the bad guy”because of her reluctance to own up to what was going on. Don’t you make the same mistake — it’s a costly lesson tolearn and I’d hate to see everything you’ve worked so hardfor, blown by one foolish error. Now go sell something, Craig Garber P.S.
